Redesigning a Pilot Tool for Simplicity and Focus
Empact partnered with a major aerospace manufacturer to redesign a mission-critical iOS application used by pilots in demanding operational environments. The goal was to simplify a highly technical tool so that key information could be understood at a glance, even in high-pressure situations, while maintaining its powerful functionality and precision.

The Challenge
How can complex data be made clear in just a few seconds?
Pilots manage vast amounts of information under intense time pressure. The customer’s existing iOS application contained powerful data and flight insights. However, it was heavily engineered and was not optimized for cockpit use. Its dense interface required users to process too much information at once, making it difficult to find what mattered most during flight operations.
Therefore, the customer needed a solution that would make the app more intuitive for pilots, without sacrificing any of its core functionalities. The challenge was to transform this complex, engineering-heavy tool into a more effective pilot assistant. It should be an intuitive app that delivers clarity, speed, and confidence. The redesign needed to preserve the app’s analytical depth while allowing pilots to interpret critical data instantly and with minimal distraction.
The Solution
Redesigning usability & operational efficiency
Empact partnered up with the customer’s teams to lead a comprehensive UX and UI redesign focused on human-centered interaction and real-world cockpit conditions.
Working closely with pilots and system engineers, we mapped the most common workflows and optimized the layout for instant readability on iPad. Together, we redesigned the app’s interface and navigation to create more intuitive interaction patterns, streamlined task flows, and an adaptive design suitable for operational environments.
Through iterative design sprints and usability testing, we restructured navigation, visual hierarchy, and data presentation to minimize cognitive load. The new interface allows pilots to absorb essential information within seconds. This allows faster decision-making and safer operations. The design balances technical depth with operational clarity, ensuring the app remains as functional as it is intuitive.
